Personalised Football Calendar - Chelsea
Terrific Gift Idea For Chelsea Fans!
Football stadiums tend to be the heart of every football club, but this is especially true in the case of Stamford Bridge and Chelsea FC. Whereas most grounds are built or chosen for a specific team, the opposite was actually true in this instance. Edwardian businessman, Gus Meers, had been planning to redevelop this old West London athletics ground, but he soon spotted that there was no London football team in the First Division. After Fulham turned down the chance to use the arena due to a financial disagreement, it was decided that Chelsea FC would be formed to provide a spectacle for the Stamford Bridge audience.
Fifty years after the club had been created, the Blues stormed the top flight and won the First Division. A Premier League title was then celebrated in the club's centenary year, following a proud tradition of cup success. Our Personalised Calendars include some memorable Chelsea wins and a series of other highlights from the club's history. Featuring twelve iconic match reports from the past hundred years, no fan of the Blues will want to miss out on this special gift, which can start from the month of your choice.
Calendar Highlights
These Personalised Calendars feature a variety of Chelsea's stand-out victories from domestic competitions, beginning with the 2-1 league win against Newcastle in 1909, followed by the 1-1 draw with Arsenal in 1935 that was played in front of over 80,000 fans. This remains a record attendance for English league football.
Chelsea's first piece of silverware came fifty years after the club had been founded and a great newspaper report of this achievement is a highlight of the Calendar. In 1951, the club had avoided relegation by just 0.044 of a goal, but four years later, the Blues won the First Division following the appointment of Ted Drake as Manager. Drake had been a top class forward for both Arsenal and England and he revolutionised Chelsea with his strict regime and hunger for trophies. Unfortunately, the club would be relegated following his departure, but the Blues had now got the model for success in place. In 1977, Eddie McMreadie led Chelsea to promotion and during the 1980s, the club would win the Second Division twice, despite huge financial trouble behind the scenes.
In addition to reports on these league adventures, the Calendar also features various cup successes. In 1965, the Blues drew 0-0 with Leicester in the second leg of the League Cup Final. As Chelsea had won 3-2 in the first match, they won the competition and captured their first major cup. In 1997, Chelsea FC faced Middlesbrough in the FA Cup Final, following a remarkable win against Liverpool in an earlier round. Ruud Gullit was the man in charge of the Blues at this time and he masterminded a terrific 2-0 win against Boro, which continues to stand out due to a speedy Di Matteo goal after just forty-three seconds. FA Cup success would be repeated for Chelsea ten years later, in a titanic battle against Manchester United that went into extra time.
