Preston North End Personalised Football Calendar
The Perfect Gift Idea For Preston North End Fans!
Preston North End FC originated as a cricket club in the 1860s. Although there was a move to form a rugby team in 1877, this soon ended in failure, as local competition was considered too strong. Football was becoming increasingly popular at the time and many sides had begun to form in Lancashire, creating a buzz around the sport for locals. In 1880, Preston North End officially became a football club and they embarked upon an incredible domination of the sport during their opening years. The Lilywhites were the first ever professional English football champions in 1888, completing the first league-cup 'double' in the process. The club finished this terrific season unbeaten in both competitions, winning fifty-nine matches out of the sixty-four played.
The Lilywhites have been on a fascinating football journey since their historic start. Our Personalised Preston North End Calendars look back at some of the best games from the past century, featuring reproduced match reports from our newspaper archives. Starting from the month of your choice, these A3 Calendars are a great gift idea for any fan of the club.
Calendar Highlights
These Personalised Preston North End Calendars begin with the Lilywhites' FA Cup run of 1922. Victories against Barnsley, Newcastle United and Arsenal had earned the team a place in the semi-final and the club went on to face Cup holders Tottenham. Preston FC won the game 2-1 following a brilliant performance and our A3 Calendar includes two articles on this terrific match. We also feature an article on the FA Cup final, which was played against Huddersfield. Unfortunately, the Lilywhites lost 1-0 following a Huddersfield penalty, but sixteen years later, the club would get its revenge.
In 1938, Preston North End again faced Huddersfield in the FA Cup Final. The match was played in front of the King and Queen of England and fans of the Lilywhites flocked to Wembley Stadium in their thousands. A defensive game would keep the supporters on the edges of their seats and by full-time, a goal had still not been scored. In extra-time, a penalty was awarded to Preston North End following a foul on George Mutch and the conversion would end as the winning goal. Preston FC had won their second FA Cup, reversing the result of 1922.
Our Calendar Gift also features the 1954 FA Cup semi-final victory against Sheffield Wednesday, in addition to various league highlights. For example, in 1956 Preston North End thrilled the Deepdale crowd by thrashing Sunderland 6-0. In 2000, the club won the Second Division title following a 3-2 victory against Millwall. Finally, a fantastic performance by David Nugent helped the Lilywhites beat Derby County 2-0 on aggregate in the 2005 play-off finals.
