That’s why it was easy for us to come up with 12 of Rovers’ biggest achievements, ranging from solid victories during the club’s pinnacle of the 1950s, to the more recent matches of the Noughties. Diary Coverage
Our Bristol Rovers Football Diaries feature 12 match reports, beginning in the 1950s and running right through to 2008. The first three are all from the 50s and include two reports – ‘55 and ’59 – taken from the club’s two most successful seasons, when they finished sixth in England’s second flight.
You’ll then find three more reports from the 1960s, the most significant of which is coverage of the Pirates’ 4-0 drubbing of local rivals, Bristol City, in ’63. Other games from this era include ten-man Rovers drawing with Derby and four more goals against Gillingham in ’66.
The next three months are all represented with draws that illustrate how Rovers have continually managed to punch above their weight. A 1-1 draw with Chelsea in 1976 is followed by another 1-1 with Forest in ’77 and a final 1-1 with Liverpool in ’92.
The diaries final three months are more recent and focus on the exploits of Rickie Lambert & Co. Here, you’ve got coverage of wins over Shrewsbury, Southampton and a memorable cup triumph over Premier League Fulham.
