Huddersfield Town Personalised Football Diary
Terrific Diary Gifts for Fans of the Terriers!
Huddersfield Town FC formed in 1908 with a budget of £500 to rent a ground. By this stage, football had been one of the most popular sports in the country for many years. However, rugby had always dominated in Huddersfield and the Northern Union had discouraged football and rugby groundshares. The Terriers eventually grew in stature and early success helped the club to gain support. A strong academy aided the development of the team and in the 1920s, Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup and three consecutive First Division titles. After enjoying this incredible decade, the club suffered a decline in form and subsequently struggled to recapture the success of its early years.
Huddersfield FC play in the Galpharm Stadium, which the team shares with the Huddersfield Giants rugby squad. Ken Davy caused controversy by becoming the chairman of both clubs simultaneously. News of his departure in 2009 left fans hopeful that the football team would be the sole priority for the new owner.
Our Personalised Huddersfield Town Diaries feature twelve reproduced match reports from our newspaper archives, including some of the club’s best performances and results since 1920. Starting from the month of your choice, this is a great gift idea for any fan of the Terriers.
Diary Highlights
These Personalised Huddersfield Town Diaries begin with the club’s FA Cup win in 1922. The Terriers had been developing into a strong team under the management of Herbert Chapman and they beat Notts County 3-1 in the semi-final to reach a second FA Cup final. The competition was decided at Stamford Bridge and Huddersfield FC faced Preston North End. Billy Smith converted a penalty to win the Cup for Huddersfield Town. This was the club’s first major trophy and reports on both semi-final and final feature in the A5 Diary.
Our Huddersfield Diary Gift also incorporates stories on a variety of other exciting FA Cup ties, as the Terriers continued to be a force in the competition. We include a preview of the 1928 final, which Huddersfield contested against Blackburn Rovers, and a match report on the 1930 final against Arsenal. There is also an article on the 3-1 semi-final victory against defending champions Sunderland in 1938. The Terriers achieved a great feat in the League Cup in 1974. Huddersfield Town were struggling in the league and had found themselves down in the Third Division. Leeds United on the other hand had just won their second First Division title and would contest the European Cup final at the end of the season. When the two teams faced each other in the second round of the League Cup, the game was meant to be formality for United. However, Huddersfield forced a replay with a terrific 1-1 draw.
League form has continued to fluctuate for the Terriers, but the Personalised Diary includes some of the club’s best performances from the past twenty years. In 1995, Huddersfield Town beat Bristol Rovers 1-2 in the play-off final. Local winger Chris Billy scored the winner with less than ten minutes to go, securing promotion to the Championship. The Terriers contested the Third Division play-offs in 2004, having missed out on automatic promotion due to goal difference. The club beat Mansfield in the final, but one of the more memorable games was the 1-2 victory against Lincoln City. In 2008, Huddersfield came back from a goal behind to beat rival Leeds United at their own ground for the first time in twenty-five years.
