Brief History of Blackburn Rovers FC
Blackburn Rovers FC was formed in 1875 by John Lewis and Arthur Constantine. The club was later a founder member of both the Football League and the Premiership. Blackburn became First Division Champions in 1912 and had won five FA Cups by the end of the 1920s. The club was relegated in 1966 and Rovers spent twenty-six consecutive seasons outside the top flight. Lifelong fan Jack Walker took over the club in 1991 and invested heavily in the team. Blackburn was promoted to the new Premier League in 1992 and they won the title three years later. A key part of the club’s revival was the appointment of former Liverpool player Kenny Dalglish as manager, but he left Blackburn Rovers soon after winning the Premiership. The club slipped down to the second division in 1999 and was promoted once again in 2001.
Did you know…
“Rovers" is a common name in football and it is attached to clubs that were forced to travel around for games, due to no home ground. Blackburn had no fixed home until the club rented a piece of farmland at Oozehead in 1877. The team then moved to Alexandra Meadows, the home of the East Lancashire Cricket Club, before relocating to Leamington Street.
Blackburn Rovers settled in their current stadium, Ewood Park, in 1890. The ground had been built eight years earlier and had already held various sporting events. Rovers spent €1,199.99 on refurbishments and hosted Accrington in their first home match. Ewood Park has a capacity of 31,367 and it includes a stand named after the club’s former owner, Jack Walker. Despite Blackburn’s early reputation as ‘rovers’, no Premiership side has played at their home ground longer than Blackburn has played at Ewood Park.
