Brief History of Bolton Wanderers FC
Bolton FC was formed in 1874 by Reverend John Farrall Wright. The club was originally called Christ Church FC, but changed its name to Bolton Wanderers in 1877. Bolton reached the FA Cup final in 1894 and 1904, before finally winning the competition in 1923. This was the first FA Cup final to be played at Wembley stadium and the Trotters beat West Ham 2-0. Bolton won the FA Cup two more times in the 1920s, beating Manchester City and Portsmouth respectively. The club also lifted the trophy in 1958. The Trotters competed in the First Division between 1935 and 1964. Many fans call this period Bolton’s golden era, as players such as Nat Lofthouse provided some stunning football. Subsequent decades were disappointing and Bolton Wanderers dropped down to the Fourth Division in the mid-1980s. The FA Cup would help the team’s confidence in the 1990s, as the Trotters beat Premiership giants, such as Liverpool and Arsenal, bringing a renewed vigour to the club. Bolton Wanderers returned to the top flight in 1995, finished sixth in the Premiership in 2005 and qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2007.
Did you know…
The club was named Bolton Wanderers in 1877, as Christ Church FC did not have a home pitch. The team “wandered" around the local area, playing their matches at a number of different locations. Bolton finally settled at Burnden Park in 1895 and played home games at this stadium for over one hundred years. The Trotters considered moving ground in1992, following the Taylor Report’s demand for all-seated stadiums. Directors decided that it would be too difficult to convert Burnden Park and confirmed the club would move elsewhere. The Reebok Stadium was built in 1997 with a capacity of 28,723 people. The ground includes a hotel and function rooms and the stadium has staged concerts for Oasis, Coldplay and Elton John.
Bolton Wanderers are also known as “The Trotters", due to a pitch that the club used towards the end of the nineteenth century. The pitch backed onto a piggery and clearances tended to end up in the pig pens. Players therefore had to ‘trot’ through the pens to retrieve their ball.
