Brief History of Chelsea FC
Chelsea FC was founded in 1905 by Edwardian businessman, Henry Augustus Mears. Mears was a sports enthusiast and had redeveloped an old West London athletic ground. When Fulham turned down the chance to use the arena due to financial disagreement, he decided to form his own team. The Blues established a tradition of glamorous signings and built towards success. Fifty years later, Chelsea became First Division Champions and the club won three FA cups by 2000.
A Russian billionaire, Roman Abramovich, bought the club in 2003 and has since invested over €719.99 million in the side. His level of investment had never been seen before in English football and the Blues soon became considered part of the Premiership’s ‘big four’. Under the management of self-proclaimed "Special One", Jose Mourinho, Chelsea became almost unbeatable. The club won Premiership titles in 2005 and 2006 and claimed three cups within three seasons. Jose Mourinho left the club in 2007, but Chelsea continued to fight for trophies. The Blues reached their first Champions League final in 2008.
Did you know…
Chelsea FC is nicknamed “The Blues" due to the colour of their kit. The song “Blue is the Colour" was released in the build up to the 1972 League Cup final and was sung by members of the first team. The single reached number five in the UK charts. Another Chelsea song was released in the build-up to the 1997 FA Cup Final. “Blue Day" was again recorded by members of the first team, but also featured Suggs.
The club has remained at Stamford Bridge throughout its history. The stadium was designed with the help of renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and it had an original capacity of 100,000 spectators. During the 1960s, Chelsea unveiled plans to turn the ground into an all-seated stadium with the capacity of 50,000. The redevelopment was beyond the club’s budget however, and it led to considerable financial problems. Stability was not regained until 1990 and the building work was completed in 2001.
