Brief History of Hibernian FC
Hibernian FC was founded in 1875 by a group of Irish football-enthusiasts from Cowgate in Edinburgh. The club won two Scottish Cups in the early years and won their first league title in 1903. Success returned to Hibs towards the end of the 1940s, as the Hibees formed a formidable front line of Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull and Willie Ormond. The Hibernian forwards became known as “The Famous Five" and are still considered the best forward line in the history of Scottish football. The team won the league three times during the Famous Five era and came second to Rangers by a single point, and then goal average, in two other seasons. Hibs became the first British side to take part in European competition in 1955, at a time when invitations were given to clubs based upon the quality of their football and whether their stadium had floodlights. The Hibees reached the semi-final of the European Cup on their first attempt and won famous ties against Barcelona and Napoli in the 1960s. Hibs enjoyed a return to domestic Cup finals in the new millennium, winning the Scottish League Cup in 2007 - their first major trophy in over fifteen years.
Did you know…
The club is also known as Hibs FC and “The Hibees", which are shortened versions of Hibernian – an old Roman name for Ireland. Hibernian was one of the first clubs to embark upon pre-season tours of America and they have worn white and green since the formation of the side. The team wore hooped shirts in the early days, which inspired the famous kit of Celtic.
The Hibees moved to Easter Road Stadium when they lost the lease at Hibernian Park in 1892. The club have remained at Easter Road ever since and fans have nicknamed the ground “The Leith San Siro", after the famous Italian stadium that is occupied by Internazionale and AC Milan. Easter Road was redeveloped in 1991 and now has a capacity of over 17,000. The stadium hosted Rugby Union matches in the 1990s and has also held international football fixtures and rock concerts.
