Brief History of Queens Park Rangers FC
Queens Park Rangers FC formed in 1882 following the merger of local teams St. Jude’s and Christchurch Rangers. QPR initially progressed slowly, but the club began to rapidly improve in 1959 when Alec Stock was appointed manager. In 1961, Queens Park Rangers scored 129 goals in fifty-two matches, which was then a record in the Third Division. Rangers won the League Cup in 1967 and reached the top flight for the first time in 1968. Although the club was immediately relegated, the team earned another promotion and this time enjoyed more success. In 1976, QPR finished as runners-up in the First Division, missing out on the title to Liverpool by just one point. The club completed the 1970s with a League Cup semi-final and a fantastic run to the UEFA Cup quarter finals. The 1980s brought further acclaim, as Queens Park Rangers reached the FA Cup final in 1982 and the League Cup final in 1986. Rangers became founder members of the Premier League in 1992, but financial problems and boardroom controversy soon hit the side. In 2007, Formula One tycoons Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore invested in the club, which helped to ease the growing crisis and returned hope to the supporters. Lakshmi Mittal, then the fifth richest man in the world, bought a twenty percent shareholding of QPR five months later.
Did you know…
The club was named Queens Park Rangers, as the majority of players came from the Queens Park area of West London. The team is also known as “Rangers", “The R’s" and “The Super Hoops". The latter nickname is a reference to the green and white hooped shirts that the team wears when playing at home.
Queens Park Rangers played in many stadia before finally settling at Loftus Road in 1963. The ground had been built in 1904 and Rangers first played here in 1917, when the venue consisted solely of an open field and a pavilion. The stadium now has a capacity of almost 20,000 supporters. In addition to QPR, the ground has hosted the London Wasps rugby club and it housed Fulham for two seasons whilst Craven Cottage was being redeveloped. Loftus Road was the first stadium in the country to be used for an international football match that did not involve England. The ground has since regularly hosted games for the Australian and Jamaican national football teams.
