Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Tigers

Hull City AFC was founded in 1904. The club strived for a place in the top division for over one hundred years, coming close on several occasions before the outbreak of the First World War. The Tigers eventually won promotion to the Premiership in 2008. A key turning point had been Adam Pearson’s purchase of the club in 2001. Pearson brought financial stability to Hull and appointed Peter Taylor as manager. Taylor led Hull City to the Championship via back-to-back promotions and built the confidence needed for the Tigers to keep improving. Phil Brown took over as the manager of Hull City in 2006. He led the club to the Championship Play-Off Finals two years later. Hull secured promotion to the top flight by beating Bristol City 1-0 at Wembley Stadium. The goal was scored by local player Dean Windass.

Hull City Football Book Coverage

This Hull Football Book opens with a famous draw against Spurs in 1907, featuring a picture of the Hull keeper rising to reach a corner kick. It goes on to cover a selection of great matches through the decades of the 20th Century and many highlights from the present era.

Early memorable games featured in the Hull City Football Book include the 10-3 thrashing of Wolves in 1919, the emphatic 5-0 win over Middlesbrough in 1922, and the 3-2 win over Everton in the fourth round of the 1927 FA Cup. The Gift Book features dramatic pictures taken at the 1930 FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal, which Hull eventually lost 1-0 in a tense replay. You can also read about other exciting cup ties, including the sixth round FA Cup game against Manchester United in 1949 - for which 75,000 people queued for tickets - and the sixth round Cup match against Chelsea in 1966.

The Gift Books relive the excitement of Billy Bremner scoring on his debut for Hull in the 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest in 1976. It follows Hull City’s meteoric rise from Division Three strugglers in 2002, to Premiership players in 2008. Newspaper coverage also includes the appointment of Peter Taylor as manager, Hull’s 2-1 win at Yeovil to clinch promotion to Division Two in 2004, promotion to the Championship in 2005 and promotion to the Premier League in 2008. A great article on the Tigers’ triumphant play-off final at Wembley is one of the highlights of this Hull City Book.

Newspaper coverage continues right up to the end of last season. This unique insight into Hull’s history makes these books truly memorable gifts and a great addition for a collector of Hull City memorabilia.

Finally – Did You Know?

  • Hull City AFC is nicknamed the Tigers due to their black and amber kit. Hull only began to play in these colours after the Second World War, however, as the club originally played in black and white.
  • Hull City missed out on promotion to the First Division in 1910 by just 0.29 of a goal, as the league was then decided by goal average.
  • The Tigers reached the FA Cup semi-final in 1930 after knocking out eventual Second and Third Division Champions – Blackpool and Plymouth Argyle.
  • Hull City won promotion to the top flight in 2008, having been based in the bottom division just five years earlier. This is the third-fastest ascent through the leagues in English football.
  • Hull was only beaten once in the club’s opening nine Premier League matches.
