Enjoy a Newspaper History of Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest FC was formed in 1865 and the club won the FA Cup for the first time in 1898. Financial problems soon plagued the side, contributing to a lack of silverware for the next sixty years. Forest won the FA Cup for a second time in 1959 and enjoyed a great top flight league campaign in 1967, finishing in the runners-up position. Brian Clough became manager of Nottingham Forest in 1975, assisted by Peter Taylor. It was to prove a successful combination. Forest won promotion to the First Division in 1977 and won the title just one year later. Nottingham Forest also won two League Cups over the following seasons and beat Malmo and Hamburger SV respectively to clinch two successive European Cups. In 1979, Nottingham Forest signed Trevor Francis. In doing so, Forest became the first side to pay a £1 million transfer fee. Taylor left his role as assistant manager in 1982, but Brian Clough continued at Forest until 1993. The club won two further League Cups during his reign.

Nottingham Forest Football Book Coverage

This Nottingham Forest Football Book opens with an emphatic 5-1 win over Liverpool in 1908. It goes on to cover a selection of great games through the decades of the 20th Century and many highlights from the present era.

Some of the memorable early games in this Nottingham Forest Football Book include Forest thrashing Leicester City 12-0 in 1909, winning promotion to Division One in 1922 and beating Manchester United 3-0 in 1935. The Gift Books also feature a report on the Nottingham Forest winning the FA Cup for the second time in 1959, thus ending the long trophy drought at the club. Relive the glory days under Clough, from his appointment in 1975 to the building of his team and the signings of key players. The Nottingham Forest Books also reflect upon the long list of honours that followed: League Cup winners in 1978, 1979, 1989 and 1990, League Champions in 1978, and of course masters of Europe in 1979 and 1980. Read about Clough sensationally quitting the club in 1993. The Gift Book also incorporates a poignant article on the emotional farewell by fans after his death in 2004.

Newspaper coverage continues right up to the end of last season. This unique insight into Forest’s history makes these books truly memorable gifts and a great addition for a collector of Nottingham Forest memorabilia.

Finally – Did You Know?

  • Nottingham Forest was named after the Forest Recreation Ground. Contrary to popular belief, the club’s name has nothing to do with Sherwood Forest.
  • Forest has worn a red strip since the club’s foundation in 1865. The team purchased twelve red caps at the Clinton Arms during the side’s inaugural meeting and the tradition of wearing red has since been maintained.
  • Nottingham Forest is famous for introducing many common components of football matches. They were the first team to wear shin pads, the first team to use goal nets and the first side to suggest the use of a referee’s whistle.
  • Nottingham Forest’s closest rival is Notts Country. However, the club shares a much fiercer rivalry with Derby County.
  • Forest was ironically saved from expulsion by the Second World War. The club had run up significant debts, but the enforced break in the league gave the team more time to pay this money back.
