Brief History of Horse Racing

Horse Racing has been a popular sport since the days of the Roman Empire, when chariot races were common. In the twelfth century, English knights returned from their crusades with strong and fast Arabian horses. The knights would enjoy two-horse races, with a wager resting on the outcome. The importing and breeding of horses became more evident in Great Britain during the following years. Henry VIII regularly imported stallions and mares for breeding during his reign and organised horse racing continued to grow. Queen Anne had a significant influence on the sport in the 1700s, as she founded Royal Ascot and provided impressive purses to motivate the riders. In 1750 the Jockey Club was formed. The club put together the complete rules of horse racing and it still retains control over the sport in the present day.

Horse Racing strikes a great balance between sport and entertainment. During the Great Depression, the public flocked to the races to watch terrific horses such as Sea Biscuit and Red Rum. Horse Racing became an affordable hobby and it enjoyed similar success to the Cinemas. The meets continue to draw big crowds in the modern day and terrific performances by jockeys and trainers ensure fascinating and competitive races.

Highlights of the Horse Racing Book

Our Personalised Horse Racing Book contains newspaper reports on a selection of classic Grand National, Epsom Derby and Cheltenham Gold Cup races. We also feature articles on other significant meets - such as Royal Ascot and Aintree - and revisit famous horse racing moments including the success and subsequent kidnapping of Shergar.

The gift books incorporate horse racing coverage that stretches back to the early 1900s. Outstanding Grand National races from the early years include Lady Nelson becoming the first woman owner to win the event in 1915, forty horses failing to finish in 1928 and Golden Miller achieving the Cheltenham Gold Cup - Grand National ‘double’ in 1934. Other memorable Grand National races include the famous fall of Devon Loch in 1956, the Foinavon pile-up in 1967, the record-breaking triple victory of Red Rum in the 1970s and the false start chaos of 1993.

The Horse Racing Book also features reproduced newspaper reports on famous wins at Cheltenham. The Gold Cup race rose in prestige following the dominance of Golden Miller in the 1930s. Nicknamed “God on Four Legs", Golden Miller was ridden by three different jockeys, yet still won the event five years in a row. The gifts contain articles on the final three wins of the legendary national hunt horse. Other highlights of the Cheltenham Cup coverage include the hat trick of victories for Arkle and Best Mate, Desert Orchid’s triumph in 1989 and trainer Michael Dickinson’s incredible feat of filling the top five places with his horses.

The Epson Derby has been the scene of enormous success for jockeys such as Lester Piggott, Pat Eddery and Willie Carson. The Horse Racing Books look back at selected victories of these riders and the sole derby win of Sir Gordon Richards.
